Writing - Text Response

In 'The Sniper' the author had a very unique way of conveying the theme in the opening paragraph. For example the author used many words that related to darkness, so that we'd have a very dark image of Dublin in our minds. For example he wrote "Dublin lay enveloped in darkness but for the dim light of the moon that shone through fleecy clouds, casting a pale light as of approaching dawn over the streets and the dark waters of the Liffey", and with this sentence he described the scene very well. This also tells us that this story will consist of a tragedy or something around those lines.

Team 5 Museum Trip

Last week on Friday, Team 5 went on a trip to the Auckland Museum. Fortunately for us KPMG, our major sponsor paid for us to go. As we were going to the museum we were split in groups. I was in a group together with Amelia and Naomi, when we got to the museum we found out that we will be with a KPMG volunteer for the day. Me and my group were with a kind woman named Alex. She was very polite and fun to be around during the time we were with her.

She came all around the museum with us and spent a whole day with us. She took photos of us, looked after us and laughed with us. I along with my group were very happy to have her as our volunteer, we felt very comfortable with her and had many fun. My favorite part of the day was 'The Winter Garden'. I found it very beautiful and exotic, I liked all the different flowers and plants. Overall I had a really great day with my friends and Alex.

Scientific Method: Onion Cells

Aim: Find a clear picture of onion cells.

Hypothesis: I think that we will be able to see a clear picture of onion cells at a magnification of 100x

Equipment:

  • 1 Onion
  • A slide
  • A cover slip
  • Tweezers
  • Blue stain

Method: The first thing we did was collect a thin layer of skin from the onion using tweezers, we then added it to our slide. After that we had to add a drop of saline to our slide that had our onion on it. After that we also had to add a drop of blue stain. Lastly we had to put a cover slip on top of our slide. Once we did that our slide was ready to look at.

Observation/Conclusion: Once we looked at it through the microscope, we tried the magnification of 4x. When we looked at it, it looked like a lot of lines connected with many small dots surrounding it. When we looked at it in the magnification of 10x I could already see it clearly. It looked like the pattern of honeycomb. It was connected together and the pattern it had looked a lot like purple honeycomb.

The onion cells we looked a lot like this.

Cheek Cells

Today Room 4 were taking a look at Cheek Cells. We wanted to see what our cheek cells look like under the microscope. We worked in groups of three and were given the task to look at our cheek cells. We were taught how to gather our cheek cells and how to create a slide.

Hypothesis: What does our Cheek Cells look like under the microscope?

Equipment:

  • Popsicle stick
  • Slide
  • Sodium Chloride
  • Methylene blue (Stain)
Method:
  • The first thing was one of our group members had to take the Popsicle stick and swab it gently in their mouth.
  • Then they had to transfer the cells onto the slide.
  • After that we had to add a drop of Sodium Chloride to our slide.
  • Then we had to add a drop of Stain to drop of Sodium Chloride.
Observation:
When we looked at the cells the first time is was on the lowest magnification. As I saw it it was really small, and all I saw were small dots and little lines.

When we looked the second time the magnification was at the second level. I looked into the lenses and I saw the cells. They looked really different to how it looked the first time. It looked like autumn leaves, that had many dots around it.

Image result for cheek cells

Lastly, it looked like a piece of land on a map. It was like a shape of a country with dots all around it. But the shape looked more like a zig zaggy country.

The History of K-Pop

K-Pop is a genre of music that is loved by many around the world. K-Pop is viewed in many ways, as they have a variety of artists, producers and entertainments. There are many different artists and groups in K-Pop. For example: BTS, EXO, GOT7, Stray Kids, Astro, Blackpink, K.A.R.D etc. Although K-Pop is a type of music it isn't like any traditional korean folk song, it is very upbeat, hyped up etc.

K-Pop was once listened to back in the days, but sadly it was banned by their Dictator. Slowly it was bought back. But they were only allowed to sing about certain topics. Then later a man had the idea to create a music academy which was aimed to create new K-Pop groups. These academies controlled everything about their artists. After that the Korean government then realized that the idea of K-Pop was a good opportunity to attract tourism and to become better known. They then spent heaps of money to build more stadiums to support the industry.

Writing - Do We Really Need School Holidays?

Do We Really Need School Holidays?
By Makayla

Do children really need school holidays? School holidays should be compulsory in schools. By letting kids have school holidays it gives them the opportunity to relax and have a break. This essay will explore whether students really need school holidays.

Children need school holidays so they can relax. For example, young children need time to play and explore while older children need time to relax and hang out with their friends. As students have school holidays it allows them to have a break from all their classes and learning. This also gives them the opportunity to spend time with loved ones.

Another reason for school holidays, is so children can spend time with their relatives. For example, school holidays gives children the opportunity to spend time with their relatives, especially their grandparents. They are able to spend weekdays with relatives and they could even go away with them. This is another reason why school holidays should be compulsory.

Lastly, school holidays are needed as they give children the time to prepare themselves for their learning. For example, school holidays allows children to have time for themselves to gather all their thoughts. So by letting children have school holidays it allows them to be ready to learn again and achieve more at school. This is another reason why school holidays should be compulsory.

Overall school holidays should be compulsory for students as they get to have a break and prepare themselves to learn again. School holidays are good in many ways, but it surely benefits the students mindset for more learning after the holidays. So in conclusion school holidays should be compulsory in schools to benefit the students health and mindset.

My Opinion On Animal Testing

Animal Testing - My Neutral Opinion

I think that animal testing can be good in some ways but bad in others. In an argument my opinion would stand strongly neutral. My opinion is neutral as I believe that animal testing can have a huge impact on our lives. But I also think that it can be bad as it causes harm to innocent animals and doesn’t let them have the right to live freely. Here are some more reasons why I have a neutral opinion on Animal testing.

Animal testing is good because they test on animals and discover new things that can be a huge impact on our life. I also think it is good because scientists research about their observations and eventually find new cures that can help us. I also think that Animal testing is very valuable as they also learn more about the animals such as, Zebrafish, Monkeys etc.

But on the other hand, Animal testing is bad because it harms innocent animals. I also think it is bad because most of the time if scientists test on animals while torturing and killing them, it might not work on humans. So in the end there was no point at all testing on animals which lead to it dying if it doesn’t even help us humans. So if the research they found out about their testing on animals doesn’t help humans, then the death of more animals will occur and many species will become endangered.

So overall my opinion on Animal testing is neutral. Animal testing has many pro’s and con’s, but if people were to show their opinion it would depend on how they saw it. So in conclusion I consider Animal Testing neutral.

Inquiry - Cell DLO

Task Description: For this task I had to make a DLO to express my knowledge about a cell. I worked on this presentation alongside Amelia, we were so happy to know that we were finished. I hope you learn heaps from this and I hope you enjoy.

How To Be A Good Child

How To Be A Good Child
By Makayla

Are you a good child for your parents? Being a good child takes a lot to make your parents proud or happy. To be a good child you must listen to your parents, Be helpful towards your parents and to be grateful and thankful for the things they provide for you.

To be a good child you should always listen to your parents. For example, if your mum or dad tells you to do something unexpectedly you should always listen. By listening to your parents, they will understand that you actively listen to them and will obey their orders. So to be a good child you should always listen.

Another way to be a good child is to help out your parents. Like, if your mum is hanging out the washing you could be a good child and help her with the washing. So by helping your mum with the washing it will show that you like to help your parents willingly. This is another way to be a good child.

To be a good child you should always be thankful and grateful for what your parents provide for you. For example, your parents do a lot for you. So to show that you love them, you should always be grateful and thankful. So by being grateful they will understand that you are grateful for the things they do for you and provide for you. This is also another way to be a good child.

So overall, here are some ways to be a good child. By showing these acts of love to your parents, they will understand how good of a child you are. There are many more ways to be a good child but these are some of the more important ideas. So in conclusion these were some ways to be a good child.

Tech @ Tamaki - Cooking // Tuna Salad

Today the Year 8's went to Tamaki College for Tech. Today was the first day in our group for our next rotation, our next rotation is Food Tech. In Food Tech we made 'Tuna Salad'. I was partnered with Angel to cook with for Food Tech.

Miss Tuipolotu gave us instructions on what and how to cook our food. After that she let us go and start cooking. The first instruction was to fill up a pot with water, and to add in the pasta. Once we did that we had to turn the stove onto high and put the pot on so the pasta can cook.

After that we had slice and dice that vegetables. The vegetables we had were, red onion, carrot, tomato, spring onion and red capsicum. After we had cut the vegetables, we had to drain the pasta as it was ready. We then had to combine the pasta with the veges.

Lastly we got mayo and tuna from Miss Tuipolotu. We had to mix that together with the veges and pasta. Once we finished our finished product it looked so delicious. Once we finished cooking we had to clean up our kitchens and put everything away. We were then allowed to eat after cleaning. Once we finished eating we then had to wash our bowls, but before that we were allowed to wrap our food to take home. So after wrapping up our food and washing our dishes we were allowed to leave.

Overall I really liked our first day in cooking for tech this year. I really liked the technique we used to cook, but mostly I really liked how our finished product came out. It was so delicious and overwhelming. I'm really excited for next week to see what we will be making.

Inquiry - Trying Empanadas

Today for inquiry in Room 4 we tried Empanada’s. It is a pastry dish native to Argentina. It looked like it was very soft, and it was a beautiful golden brown color. It smells delicious and very savoury. I thought it looked delicous and really want to experience the different types of flavors. It tasted sweet and a little spicy. The texture was really soft and melted in my mouth. I really liked that it was sweet but then it also had a kick of spice in there. So I really appreciate Mrs Stone for cooking this for us I thought it was really delicious.

Anthony Rockwall's View On Money (Mammon And The Archer By O. Henry)

Anthony Rockwall from Mammon And The Archer believes money can buy anything. In the text Anthony tried and tried to convince his son Richard, that money can buy anything. In the text he quoted "Don't say that, money is successful every time. I don't know anything you can't buy with it...". He stated this making him sound as if his life was drowned in money. There are more quotes like that in the text but that one was the quote that caught my eye. If you would like to go and check out the story.

Trying New Foods - Mediterranean Region

Today for Inquiry we were learning about foods from the Mediterranean Region. Such as Olives, Feta etc. We learnt a lot about these foods. Such as the history behind it, What you can make it into, and more. After that we got the opportunity to try some foods. We tried the Olive, Feta, Pan Au Chocolat, and Bread. In my opinion I only liked the bread. I thought that the bitter and sour taste of the olive was to much and I didn't like the saltiness. I also thought that the Feta was nice but a bit to peppery. I think it normally isn't peppery but it was in some pepper. Also I really liked the Pan Au Chocolat it was really fluffy and chocolaty. I really loved the texture and thought it was delicious. Lastly for the Bread I think it was really nice very soft and squishy in my mouth.

Year 8 Leadership Camp

On Wednesday the 15th of May, the Y8 students from Pt England School departed from Glen Innes to go on our trip to our Camp which was held in Thames. We were stuck on a bus for about an hour and a half and arrived at our destination which was based at Kauaeranga Valley Christian Camp.

Once we arrived we had our morning tea. After morning tea we took our luggage to our cabins/dorms, I really liked my cabin because I had all of my friends. After we took our luggage we headed off to the gym to do a workshop with Mrs. Tele'a the workshop she was working on was 'Follow The Leader'. In this workshop, our teams had to rely on the leaders
(I was a leader) to guide them past the obstacles and to the finish line while blindfolded. After that, we did some team reflections and wrote our opinions on a piece of paper. After that our first workshop was done.

After our 'Follow The Leader' workshop we did some more activities individually and with our team. My favorite activity/rotation that day was the air rifles. I was in the team Kauaeranga, we were split into A & B teams so that the activities weren't too crowded. So my team (Kauaeranga A) were the first team to experience the activity of air rifles. I really enjoyed it because I have never done it before and I picked it up really quickly.

But overall my highlight at Y8 Leadership Camp was the concert/disco. I really liked it as I got to watch the other teams perform the form of entertainment. My favorite Item was Kauri's item, their item was hilarious they decided to make their own version of the fairy tale 'Cinderella'. Their item was liked by everyone so they ended up coming first. Me and my group did a talent show skit. Everyone thought it was really cool and funny but Kauri's item went way past us. But luckily our team came second and I was really happy and proud of my group.
After that camp, I took in a lot of tips and information to enhance my role as a leader, not only as Rangatahi but as the oldest students in our school. Leaving that camp was really sad because I had so much fun but then I knew that I would take in a lot and be a really good role model from then on. One day I hope that I can go back to that camp and experience all those activities once again to bring the memories back to me as I spent time with all the Y8's for the last time before heading off to college. This camp will really affect me as this was the last time I spent a long period of time with the Y8's and all my friends from that year group, and I will really miss that experience.

FIOP - Letter To Mrs Stone

WALT: Write for a specific purpose
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Mrs Stone,

Paragraph 1: Introduce who you are (things like your culture, family, age)
Hello my name is Makayla. I am Samoan, Maori and Niuean. I live with my mum and I am an only child. I turned 12 years old on January 18th.

Paragraph 2: What are some of your interests or favourite things ?
I really love baking and cooking, I think it is really cool how there are so many ingredients to use in cooking and baking. I also love binge watching Netflix to see new and old TV shows and movies.

Paragraph 3: What do you like and dislike at school? What are your goals for 2018?
In school my favorite subjects are Literacy and Inquiry. I don’t really like Maths because I’m not really good at Maths and I think it is really complicating. My goals for 2019 is to work hard and to focus on my school work. I want to set these goals so I can have good results this year as it’s my last year here.c

Paragraph 4: What does a good teacher do? How can Mrs Stone support you this year?

I think what makes a good teacher is to be nice but to also be hard towards kids, by hard I mean having high expectations because then it allows the children to think out of the box and try their best to meet your expectations. This year I think Mrs Stone can help me by letting me know what I should work on and ways to improve.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Task Description: For this task I had to write a response letter to Mrs Stone telling her more about me. We had to make sure that it was written in full sentences and it was in the right structure. After that I had to post it on my blog. I hope you enjoy.

Writing/Debate ~ Should Facebook Be More Vigilant In Checking That Users Are Over The Age Of 13?

Should Facebook be more vigilant in checking that users are over the age of 13?

I think that Facebook should be more vigilant towards under-aged users because they aren’t as experienced as adults are. I also think that under-aged users should be banned due to all the bad influential content. And, by saying that If a under-aged user is detected that Facebook should at least ask for a reason why they’re on this site. Because they might be on their due to family reasons or they might be sharing an account with a older family member. Sometimes under-aged users don’t know what their getting themselves into such as being cat-fished by new friends or strangers. Also they can get themselves into trouble by clicking the wrong thing and leaving a bad online footprint. Also under-aged users can be traumatized by videos or post they see on this site.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Task Description:
For this task I had to write a piece of writing about the question above. This piece of writing was about our debate we had about this question. After that I had to post this piece of writing onto my blog. I hope you enjoy!

Polyfest 2019

Have you ever been to Polyfest before? Polyfest is a cultural event that includes a variety of events/activities such as, cultural performances, food stalls, and many other activities. Polyfest has been up and running for forty-four years now and has been held at Manukau Sports Bowl, and luckily for Team 5 we had the opportunity to go ahead and check out 'The Polyfest School Day'.

We had the chance to go and check it out. We were there since around 10am to 2:30pm. We were put into groups/pods. I was in Pod 3 with Mrs Stone and had Sam as my group leader. Firstly when we got to school we had to proceed with our normal routine till about 9am. Then we had to separate into our pods and get ready to get on our bus. As soon as we arrived we all met up to let the officials add the finishing touches.

Once everything was set we split off into our pods and went to different stations to start our rotations. Our first rotation was with 'FLAVA', We learnt a couple dance moves with a tutor named Josh from ID CO (Identity Dance Company). It was very fun and interesting to see how educated you can be from other subjects.

After that we had about four more rotations, to be honest my favorite station was the AUT two beat station. It was really cool to meet the volunteers and participate in their activity. Also I got to meet a new person named Cassidy Mans. We had to make up a two beat combination that would make it into the beat of two paces.

Then after that we had the chance to check out the Maori stage. We got there just in time to see Otahuhu College perform, we also got to see an old teacher aid from our school Ms Wai. Their performance was so amazing and cheerful.

After that we made our way back to our meeting point. Once we got there we found Anna and Jozlo dancing on the stage with other school kids. It was really cool to see them represent our school in a dance competition. Suddenly the music stopped and everybody cheered for Jozlo and Anna.

Once everybody was ready we went around to the food stalls and bought some food and cold refreshments. I bought me a Mango smoothie and a Tropical slushy. Also Paikea and some other girls bought some more food and we all shared. After that there were also some stations where we could get some free stuff for doing certain activities. We were going around to other stations to try different things and soon enough it was time to go. I was gutted to leave but then I was also so happy that we got to experience this event and experience.

How To Be A Good Leader

How To Be A Good Leader
By Makayla

Intro:
Do you know what a good leader looks and acts like? There are many ways to be a good leader, simple ways and  complex ways. These are some examples or ways to show good leadership and being a reliable leader.

Body Paragraph 1: Trustworthy
Firstly, you must be known as a trustworthy/reliable peer. Being reliable or trustworthy is one of the characteristics a good leader should entrust and stand out by. Being trustworthy shows what you can be trusted with and lets others know they can have trust in you and know that you are a good leader.

Body Paragraph 2: Support
Another way is to show support. Showing support means to always be there for others. A good leader should always show support towards others because they will be known as a good influence to others and let them know they will be kind and worthy of their needs.

Body Paragraph 3: Loyalty
Lastly, a good leader should include or be entrusted with the characteristic of loyalty. Showing loyalty is one of the important perks of being a good leader. Loyalty is basically like showing support towards others and being trustworthy and kind to your other peers.

Conclusion:
In the end all of these important perks will help you be a good leader. Basically being a good leader includes, being loyal towards others, showing support and being a reliable peer. Try showing these characteristics of being a good leader and see how it helps.
