WLJ Bonus Activity Day 4

I think that fisherman should be banned from fishing at Farewell Spit. I think this because they have been killing our native hector's dolphins and every year there's been hectors dolphins getting killed. I think that that is not good because the hector's dolphin's are native and if they are getting killed every year then soon in the future they will be extincted.

  1. Hi Makayla,

I think that you have raised some really important points in your blog post. We do have to be aware of the impact that fishing is having on the native dolphin population in New Zealand. There is a genuine risk that too many dolphins will be injured during fishing expeditions and die, causing mass extinction. I really hope that we are able to find a way to allow fishermen to catch their fish but also protect the dolphins.

Perhaps we could ask the fishermen to only fish in Farewell Spit when dolphins are not present. It would be difficult to enforce this rule, though, as it would require us to monitor the dolphins' movements and know exactly where they were at all times.

What do you think of this idea? Would it work? I'd love to know what you think...

    Bye for now!

    Rachel :)
